Smokers in BC may pay more

| September 30, 2011 | 0 Comments

Smokers in BC may soon be paying more for their dirty habit.  No raise in buying the actual cigarettes but instead there will be an increase in their Medical Service Plan. I think this is a great idea.  I have always wondered why I should have to pay for someone else’s unhealthy decisions. This new idea is getting a very positive review, in a town hall meeting in Abbotsford earlier this week 4000 people were polled and 76 percent are in favour of this new idea. If this goes through it will be a huge step forward to becoming a preventative health care system instead of relying on our old system of being reactive.

The Good news for current smokers is a new program just implemented by the B.C. government will start giving smokers who want to quit a free 12-week supply of either nicotine gum, patches, or a free prescription for smoking-cessation drugs. All participants will have to be registered with Healthlink B.C. to be eligible.

Premier Christy Clark estimates this will cost B.C. twenty-five million dollars a year which is a huge savings in the long run as we spend over a billion dollars every year treating people’s diseases caused by smoking.
